Focus of the Month:
Youth Leaders in Masson, Haiti

by Naba Gurung, PWRDF Humanitarian Response Coordinator We visited the village of Masson where we were welcomed by the leaders of the local youth group. Working with the Christian Reform World Relief Committee (a partner PWRDF is working with in Haiti through the Action by Churches Together (ACT) Alliance) the youth took charge of doing a door to door survey for the initial assessment of damages and needs. We met with affected families who are living under tents and tarpaulins (distributed by CRWRC/ACT) in the local soccer field. With many concrete houses and schools down, the removal of rubble appears to be a big challenge, for which CRWRC/ACT has provided tools such as wheelbarrows, shovels and hammers to the people in Masson.

Host a Dinner, Save the World
Host an inter-faith dinner in your community to feed discussion of global poverty, peace, and the environment
How can having dinner help to address issues of poverty, peace, and the environment?
In June of this year, the leaders of the G8 and G20 (the G8 is the Group of 8: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the US, Russia, and Japan; the Group of 20 is a gathering of finance ministers and central bankers from 20 economies) will be gathering in Huntsville and Toronto, Ontario.
The week before the G8 and G20 summits, a group of faith leaders from Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Baha’i, Aborginal, and other religious traditions will be meeting in Winnipeg to discuss ways to encourage leaders at the summits to act on the justice issues detailed in the 2010 Interfaith Statement called A Time for Inspired Leadership and Action, which call on the leaders of the G8 and G20 to:
1. Address poverty;
2. Care for our Earth;
3. Invest in peace
This interfaith gathering is being hosted by Archbishop Fred Hiltz, our own Primate! MORE>>
In Memory of Archbishop Oscar Romero Here
from the PWRDFblog post March 24, 2010
Today marks the 30th anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero. Romero's story is one which has been tremendously important to me in my own growth in faith and justice. I first saw the 1989 film Romero (see the trailer below) a couple of years after it came out, and it really helped me to see the link between the Gospel and the need to stand up for justice in the world. It also led to my doing some learning about Liberation Theology, and about the role of (Anglican) Archbishops Desmond Tutu and Ted Scott in the fight to end apartheid in South Africa.
Romero's call for peace and justice, for freedom for all people continues to echo around the world from his native El Salvador to all corners of the world. Romero deplored the violence which was afflicting his own nation- both its soldiers and the rebels who fought the government. He pleaded with the US and other nations to stop military aid to El Salvador. It is ironic that his assassin was trained by the US military in the School of the Americas. MORE>>
